FortisAlberta is seeking a motivated and detail‑oriented Electrical Engineering Student to support our Advanced Power Systems team. 

In this role, you will gain hands‑on experience with Distributed Energy Resource (DER) assessments, system analysis, and power system modelling. You will work closely with engineers to evaluate system performance, contribute to technical studies, and support safe, reliable operation of the electrical distribution network. 

This opportunity is ideal for a student who enjoys problem solving, learning new tools and technologies, and contributing to both independent and team‑based projects!

 

Job Description:
•    Audit existing Distributed Energy Resource sites for compliance with interconnection standards.
•    Verify electrical system models and perform load flow, short‑circuit, relay desensitization, and COG analysis using system modelling tools.
•    Produce 25 kV distribution feeder assessments and recommend system improvements based on findings.
•    Update and manage Distributed Energy Resource audit records, including documentation and audit status.
•    Evaluate Distributed Energy Resource projects using FortisAlberta’s anti‑islanding screening process.
•    Support special projects and perform additional duties as required.

 

Qualifications:
•    Currently enrolled in an Electrical Engineering degree program and returning to full‑time studies.
•    Strong communication and listening skills, with the ability to build rapport with clients, stakeholders, and team members.
•    Basic understanding of power system analysis concepts.
•    Readiness to collaborate within a dynamic team environment.
•    Forward‑thinking mindset with interest in leveraging technology.
•    Strong judgment, critical thinking, and problem‑solving skills.
•    High attention to detail with strong analytical and organizational abilities.
•    Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Access, Word, and Outlook.
•    Ability to work independently or as part of a team and contribute to continuous improvement.

 

Important:
•    Temporary student role.
•    Monday – Friday, 37.5 hours per week.
•    Based out of our Airdrie Kingsview office location. 
•    All successful candidates will be subject to an education verification, criminal background check and must provide references. 
•    Additional testing may be required.
