FortisAlberta is seeking a highly skilled Load Planning Engineer / EIT to support equitable, timely customer access to electric distribution system capacity.
In this role, you will evaluate customer load requests by modeling and analyzing the distribution system, identifying capacity constraints, and recommending technical solutions to support growth. You will work closely with customers, internal teams, and external stakeholders to ensure system reliability, regulatory compliance, and effective project delivery.
This position is ideal for an experienced power systems engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges and working at the intersection of engineering and customer service!
Job Description:
- Develop and analyze distribution system load‑flow models to assess capacity, voltage performance, and equipment loading.
- Perform motor‑starting, harmonic, and short‑circuit studies to support customer load requests and system reliability.
- Identify system constraints and define technical requirements to safely supply new or increased customer load.
- Prepare clear engineering reports outlining scope, constraints, and required system upgrades.
- Maintain and manage the customer load request queue to ensure equitable access to system capacity.
- Track large customer projects and provide technical leadership to internal and external stakeholders.
- Coordinate with transmission facility owners and support development of transmission solutions where required.
- Ensure planning practices align with regulatory, code, and safety requirements and support continuous improvement of planning processes.
Qualifications:
- Degree in Electrical Engineering.
- 3+ years of related experience.
- Must be registered as a Professional Engineer or be eligible to register as a Professional Engineer with APEGA.
- Engineers In Training (EIT) may also be considered for this role.
- Solid computer skills with a working knowledge of SAP, CYME, GIS systems, MS Office, Customer Relationship Management (CRM) is an asset.
- Strong understanding of power system analysis, protection, and control concepts.
- Proven ability to analyze complex technical issues and apply sound engineering judgment.
- Strong communication, organization, and stakeholder‑management skills with a customer‑focused approach.

- Located at our Airdrie office.
- Hybrid role, Mondays and Fridays work from home.
