DESCRIPTION: 
Under the general direction of the Sr. Lead Engineer Power Quality, the Power Quality (PQ) Engineer is primarily accountable for performing power quality investigations, ensuring the integrity of the Automated Meter Reading (AMR) system, and functioning as a technical resource within the Engineering Department. The PQ Engineer will apply sound knowledge of the electrical distribution system to ensure a high quality of power is delivered to customers by correcting and mitigating power quality related problems. The PQ Engineer is key to the successful integration of distributed energy resources (DER), advanced technologies, and other customer facilities on the distribution system.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (but not limited to):
•    Develop and document troubleshooting processes and procedures for Power Quality and AMR concerns, which includes:
•    Power Quality issues such as Voltage Sag/Swell, Under/Over Voltage, Voltage Fluctuation, Voltage Flicker, Current/Voltage Distortion, etc.
•    DER/other advanced technology integration and operation on the distribution system
•    Motor starting and integration on the distribution system
•    Telephone interference due to power line induction
•    Interference issues such as Television Interference (TVI) and Radio Frequency Interference (RFI)
•    AMR Signal interference and attenuation
•    Run data diagnostics and provide solutions when identifying and analyzing anomalies.
•    Isolate, identify and resolve operational issues in a timely manner.
•    Troubleshoot problems as they develop and coordinate resolution across departments; use knowledge of the electrical distribution system and equipment and of the technical characteristics of the varied AMR communication mediums (e.g. PLC, Cellular).
•    Support system visibility enhancement capital projects including power quality sensors.
•    Develop and/or assist in the development of business cases that will involve the design and implementation of new or refined effective and efficient processes.
•    Further develop and refine FortisAlberta PQ and related DER standards.
•    Develop engineering study guidelines and review customer engineering studies.
•    Develop and support technical training programs for Engineers, Engineering Technologists and Field Technicians.
•    Special projects and other duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
•    Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills including the ability to clearly present information to various audiences.
•    Demonstrated ability to build partnerships through intuitive business insight. This includes the ability to make recommendations and influence outcomes.
•    Demonstrated ability to resolve issues by analyzing and evaluating possible solutions.
•    Excellent organization and time management skills in order to manage multiple priorities and competing demands.
•    Self-motivated with the ability to work with minimal work direction and supervision.
•    Demonstrated ability in using MS Office applications. 
•    Proficiency in use of CYMDIST, EMTP, PowerBI, MATLAB, PQView, Excel VBA programming, Java/Python programming, and use of SQL server/databases. 
•    Solid knowledge in power flow/short circuit analysis, harmonic analysis, motor start analysis and other advanced power system studies.
•    Experience in testing, troubleshooting, power quality measurements and data analysis.
•    Advanced knowledge of Power Quality indices and CSA/IEEE/IEC standards for distortion (harmonic, interharmonics and subharmonic voltage fluctuations, voltage flicker, telephone interference, etc.

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
•    Post-secondary Degree in Electrical Engineering.
•    Must be registered as a Professional Engineer or be eligible to registered as a Professional Engineer with APEGA.
•    Post-graduate degree in Electrical Engineering would be an asset.
•    Experience working in a regulated environment, preferably within the electrical utility industry, would be an asset.
