DESCRIPTION: 
Under the general direction of the Manager Facilities Operations, the Supervisor Facilities Planning & Operations will be responsible for identification, project management and delivery of renovation and upgrade projects at FortisAlberta’s province wide facilities. This role will lead the Building Operations Technicians and work with contractors, environment, OH&S, security and local management to determine scope and budget required and to coordinate resources and monitor and report on progress for facility projects. In addition, this role will support on-going facility programs, the Integrated Workplace Management System (IWMS) and assist in routine premise lifecycle inspections and scheduled maintenance.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (but not limited to):

Leadership:

  • Supervise Facilities Operations team in the day-to-day operation; this includes providing direction, expertise and advice to employees, identifying employee training requirements, and formally managing the performance of employees.
  • Manage all elements of employee relations, including working closely with Human Resources on hiring, terminations, training and performance appraisals for the employee file, administering progressive discipline, and resolving labour relations issues and/or grievances.

 

Supervision of Facilities Projects & Programs:

  • Lead  large projects; this includes budgeting, scheduling, awarding and monitoring renovation and relocation projects to successful completion with a minimum of disruption to employees, contractors, and public.
  • Provide effective supervision of capital projects, forecasts, project schedules and overall programs.
  • Coordinate with contractors and Facilities team members for tenant requests and routine inspections, including testing and inspection of emergency generators and life safety systems and mechanical and electrical modifications and repairs.
  • Continuously seek ways to gain greater efficiencies and enable a safe and healthy work environment by recommending and implementing industry workspace best practices and ensuring they are maintained.
  • Create Gantt charts to schedule and coordinate tasks and project activities.
  • Recognize and mitigate foreseeable risks to project delivery, such as ensuring mechanical, life safety and electrical systems are not compromised during construction.
  • Oversee contractors to ensure project quality and service agreements are performed as scheduled to contract specifications, this includes evaluating and assessing results.
  • Share expertise and provide updates to project stakeholders.
  • Monitor department contracts to maintain expenses within budget and quality standards.
  • Liaise with Contracts department for setting up and managing contracts.
  • Work with Facilities Managers and Field Operations Directors and Managers to develop the facilities five year capital plan
  • Assist Facilities Manager and team, along with contractors, to track and report progress related to the capital plan objectives and schedule.
  • Assist Manager Facilities Operations in planning and coordinating larger scope projects.
  • Ensure FortisAlberta facilities comply with all Corporate, Federal, Provincial, and City codes, regulations, procedures, practices, and guidelines related to environmental, OH&S, security and fire protection.
  • Compile data, create reports, and review recommendations for improvements with Manager Facilities Operations and stakeholders related to efficiencies, cost savings, reliability, and safety.
  • Contribute to the documentation and implementation of facilities procedures, best practices and new standards
  • Special projects or other duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Customer service focus with the proven ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with team members and internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills including the ability to clearly present information to various audiences in both formal and informal settings.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude for building mechanical and electrical system operation.
  • Ability to work both independently with minimum or no supervision as well as integrate effectively as a member of the team.
  • Energetic, enthusiastic, flexible and adaptable to a wide variety of duties and settings.

  • Consistently present and maintain a positive and professional image.
  • Demonstrated ability to review and interpret architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical prints and specifications.
  • Familiarity in obtaining development and building permits.
  • Knowledge of relegated regulations, standards, and codes.
  • Working knowledge in BMS, and Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook), familiarity with SAP would be an asset.
  • Proficient in Project Management software.

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Project Management, or related Technology certification  plus seven (7) years’ experience performing project management for larger commercial/office facilities is required.
  • An equivalent  combination of experience and education may be considered.
  • Experience with HVAC and electrical systems is required.
  • Valid Class 5 license is required.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) or other project management certification or equivalent is preferred.
  • Experience with project management software AutoCAD Lite would be an asset.
  • Experience in servicing multi-level, multi-functional sites of up to 100,000 square feet would be an asset. 

 

Special Conditions:

  • Frequent travel (Travel requirement of up to 60-70% within Alberta) that require overnight stays.
  • All successful candidates will be required to produce a current driver's abstract.
