DESCRIPTION:
Under the general direction of the Manager Safety & Work Methods, the Supervisor Safety Compliance will be responsible for ensuring that FortisAlberta applies and adheres to federal, provincial, and municipal regulations by monitoring and actioning changes to FortisAlberta standards and policies. in accordance with current applicable legislation. The Supervisor Safety and Compliance will be responsible for providing guidance, supervision, and direction to a team of direct reports consisting of safety and compliance staff.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (but not limited to):
Leadership:
- Lead, coach, mentor, and motivate a team of employees; this includes providing direction, expertise, and advice to employees, identifying employee training requirements, and formally managing the performance of employees.
- Foster a positive learning environment for the team and guide employees on their skills development.
- Manage all elements of employee relations, including working closely with Human Resources on hiring, terminations, training, and performance appraisals for the employee file, administering progressive discipline, and resolving labour relations issues and/or grievances.
Supervision of Safety and Compliance:
- Ensure Safety standards and procedures are reviewed and updated in accordance with current legislation.
- Interpret legislation to ensure FortisAlberta is compliant.
- Assist in setting corporate direction; this includes initiating, developing, implementing and managing new and updated employee safety programs.
- Lead and maintain the Certificate of Recognition (COR).
- Conduct internal audits and be the main point of contact for the external audit.
- Provide regular updates for investigations that require external reporting (OHS, Canadian Electricity Association (EC), and Municipal Affairs).
- Ensure proper reporting of incidents internally and externally.
- Educate and train employees on all aspects of the safety management system; this includes investigations, site observations, and interpretation of standards.
- Monitor industry trends and safety best practices through participation on national committees including but not limited to, Electricity Canada, OH&S, Western Energy Institute
- Analyze and identify internal leading and lagging trends to assist in incident/injury prevention.
- Support quarterly reports and feedback to leaders on site observation and Injury Prevention Plans completed in the field.
- Compile regular reports to update senior leaders about ongoing safety initiatives.
- Participate and represent FortisAlberta on internal and external committees, business process teams and special projects as assigned.
- Create and deliver presentations to key stakeholders, as required.
- Identify and initiate improvements for training policies, processes, and procedures.
- Special projects and other duties, as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Proven ability to lead highly motivated and cross functional teams.
- Excellent customer service focus with the proven ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with team members and internal and external stakeholders.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and competing demands under pressure and tight timelines.
- Outstanding ability to build partnerships with all levels of employees and contractors through intuitive business insight and personal credibility.
- Proven ability to resolve issues by analyzing and evaluating possible solutions and negotiating outcomes with various stakeholders.
- Thorough understanding of applicable safety standards, code regulations and legislation with the ability to translate changes into company standards, policies, and procedures.
- Thorough knowledge of key safety programs such as Health and Safety Management Systems, Hazard Identification & Mitigation, and Accident Investigations.
- Demonstrated ability using MS Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Degree or Diploma in a relevant discipline or Journeyman Power Line Technician certificate plus a minimum of seven (7) years of related experience is required.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- A minimum of three (3) years of progressive supervisory/leadership experience is preferred.
- Experience working in a regulated environment, preferably within the electrical utility industry, would be an asset.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
- Frequent travel or overnight absences may be required.
- Must hold a valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s license.
