DESCRIPTION:

Reporting to the Vice President Stakeholder Engagement & Energy Solutions, the Director Government and Stakeholder Relations is accountable to develop and implement comprehensive government relations strategies to advance the organization’s objectives. They are also responsible for building and maintaining relationships with key government stakeholders including elected and senior officials to provide input and influence outcomes that will protect and enhance the business.  

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (but not limited to):

  • Develop and implement comprehensive government relations strategies to advance the organization's objectives through ongoing advocacy. 
  • Monitor and analyze legislative and regulatory developments, providing insights and recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with government officials, industry colleagues and associations, community leaders, and other stakeholders.
  • Prepare and present reports and updates on government relations activities and outcomes to the executive team and board of directors.
  • Collaborate with key internal stakeholders to develop positions and gain alignment while enhancing relationships and building FortisAlberta’s corporate image with key external stakeholders including government officials; this includes educating, providing input and influencing outcomes. 
  • Provide leadership and liaise with internal departments to build position summaries and business cases to support strategic and innovative energy solutions based on opportunities, risks, and costs. 
  • Work with key internal stakeholders to identify and resolve local issues affecting FortisAlberta's operations and reputation and significant public policy that may affect company policy and/or regulations. 
  • Create and deliver presentations to key stakeholders.
  • Provide guidance around communication issues with local media; this includes working with Corporate Communications to authorize key messages, positively positioning FortisAlberta as a leader in the community and supporting with community sponsorship Provide leadership on committees, special projects and business process teams. 
  • Effectively manage departmental budget ensuring budget targets are achieved. 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Advanced technical knowledge of the Alberta electrical market structure, regulatory process and distribution operations. 
  • Thorough understanding of all Acts governing the operation of an electrical utility as well as the Acts governing our key stakeholders.
  • Outstanding ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders; this includes excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work with culturally diverse communities and associations.
  • Leadership skills with the ability to lead highly motivated teams and communicate corporate goals and vision; this includes providing insight and guidance to the corporation as it pertains to political, regulatory and operational issues.
  • Customer service focus with the ability to understand customers’ needs and opportunities as well as resolve issues.
  • Superior analytical and negotiation skills required to resolve issues, evaluate possible solutions, and gain consensus; this includes the ability to recognize opportunities for improvement and efficiency in processes and practices.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills to manage multiple priorities and a diverse portfolio of projects under tight timelines.
  • Excellent presentation skills with the ability to create and deliver presentations to various audiences.
  • Thorough understanding of the political process, particularly an understanding of the roles and decision-making processes of the municipal and provincial government.
  • A high level of integrity and professionalism.

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • University degree in Business, Political Science, Public Administration, Law or a related discipline plus a minimum of 10 years of experience in government relations, public affairs, or a related field. 
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the utility industry would be an asset.
  • Experience in Indigenous relations would be an asset.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. 

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:

  • Valid Class 5 drivers permit.
  • Travel, evening work and participation at weekend events is required.
