What Are We Looking For?

 

FortisAlberta is looking for an experienced benefits and pension specialist to fill the position of Human Resources Advisor – Benefits & Pension. Under the general direction of the Manager, Pensions, Benefits & HRIS, the Human Resources Advisor, Benefits & Pension is primarily responsible for the administration of the benefits, pension, and savings programs.  This role will provide support and guidance to the HR Department, employees, and leaders on our programs.

 

Please note this is a permanent, full-time position.

 

The Human Resources Advisor – Benefits & Pension will administer FortisAlberta’s group benefits plan, pension plans (Defined Contribution and Defined Benefit), and post-retirement benefit plans. Ongoing responsibilities include daily, monthly, and annual activities, including processing new hires, retirements, terminations, contributions, reconciliations, recurring audits, and responding to employee inquiries accurately and in compliance with applicable legislation, plan texts, policies, and practices.  This position is responsible for administering the Employee Share Purchase Program (ESPP) activities including quarterly purchase periods, account and payment processing and employee communications.

 

With a focus on customer service, the Human Resources Advisor – Benefits & Pension is the first point of contact for employees, retirees and HR team members for benefits, pension, savings, and retirement related matters.  Clear and concise communications are key in preparing and maintaining information and communication materials remain accurate and current.  This position is also responsible for designing, developing and delivery of employee benefit, pension, and financial wellness communications, through various mediums including written materials, presentations, and employee sessions.

 

With keen attention to detail, the Human Resources Advisor – Benefits & Pension will be expected to prepare and process regular and year end reconciliations including payroll deductions, taxable benefits, annual statements, pension adjustments and regulatory filings. In addition will be responsible for monthly invoice payments, GL account reconciliations, and preparing budget estimates.  

 

Other duties will include working with third party consultants to maintain and monitor benefits and pension plans to ensure program compliance; demonstrating continuous effort to improve administration and decrease processing times, and providing recommendations to implement changes to contracts, policies, and communication material resulting from plan design changes, collective bargaining or changes in benefits and pension legislation.

To be successful in the Human Resources Advisor – Benefits & Pension position, you will possess:
•    Comprehensive knowledge of group benefit, pension, and savings, and share purchase plans and programs.
•    Advanced mathematical and analytical skills with demonstrated ability to resolve issues by analyzing and evaluating possible solutions.   
•    Proven ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with internal and external parties; this includes excellent communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
•    Customer service focus supported by excellent communication skills. 
•    Demonstrated discretion and sound judgment in the handling of confidential information; this includes a high degree of professionalism, integrity, and objectivity.
•    Excellent organizational and time management skills to manage multiple and diverse projects concurrently. 
•    Demonstrated initiative in recognizing opportunities for improvement and efficiency. 
•    Proven ability to work within a team environment. 
•    Advanced proficiency in Excel; familiarity with SAP would be considered an asset.

 

Qualifications we are looking for:
•    Degree or diploma in Human Resources, Business, or other related discipline plus a minimum of 5 years of Benefit, Pension and/or Human Resources experience; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
•    Experience and knowledge of registered pension and benefit plans is required.
•    Completion of or working towards CEBS designation would be considered an asset.
•    Experience working in a regulated environment, preferably within the electrical utility industry, would be considered an asset.
