DESCRIPTION:

Reporting to the Director, Finance, the Senior Manager, Finance Transformation will play a key leadership role in modernizing and advancing FortisAlberta’s Finance function. This role will lead strategic financial systems projects, including the reconfiguration of existing systems and the implementation of new technologies, supported by strong business cases that drive measurable value. Additionally, the Senior Manager will lead process optimization efforts to strengthen scalability, improve efficiency, and enhance the department’s ability to deliver timely, accurate, and insightful financial information for decision-making, compliance reporting, and long-term organizational growth.

 

Working closely with the Finance leadership team and the Company’s IT team, this role will help design and execute a multi-year transformation roadmap, balancing near-term priorities with longer-term strategic objectives. As a key change leader, the Senior Manager will oversee cross-functional project teams, champion continuous improvement initiatives, and collaborate with both internal partners and external vendors to ensure successful project delivery and sustainable outcomes.

 

The ideal candidate is a proactive and strategic transformation leader with a strong combination of experience in financial systems, project management skills, technology implementation experience, and a continuous improvement mindset.


DUTIES & RESPONSIBLITIES INCLUDE:
Leadership

  • Provide strategic leadership by guiding, coaching, and mentoring a team of accounting professionals to foster their growth and development. This includes offering clear direction, sharing expertise, and providing sound advice to support team members' success.
  • Identify individual and team training needs, while actively managing performance through formal evaluation processes to drive accountability and achievement of organizational objectives.
  • Manage all elements of employee relations, including working closely with Human Resources on hiring, terminations, training, and performance appraisals for the employee file, administering progressive discipline, and resolving labour relations issues and/or grievances.

Finance

  • Lead the ongoing transformation and modernization of the Finance function, driving innovation, implementing enabling technologies, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. This role will play a key part in evolving Finance into a strategic business partner and performance enabler, supporting the successful execution of FortisAlberta’s strategic and business objectives.
  • Spearhead automation initiatives to streamline transactional processes, optimize end-to-end finance workflows, and effectively integrate both digital tools and human capabilities to maximize operational efficiency and scalability.
  • Co-create (with the Finance Leadership team) a vision for continuous innovation and transformation: Build a roadmap to introduce and adopt Agile development practices. Provide process change thought leadership and execution, building new capabilities to re-envision processes and operationalizing new ways of working.
  • Lead finance transformations by strategically prioritizing initiatives, fostering training and adoption, documenting current workflows, identifying and implementing process improvements, and developing objectives and key results.
  • Establishing and prioritizing the key workstreams needed to enhance SAP for finance.
  • Providing thought leadership, best practices and subject matter expertise in finance transformation and business process optimization.
  • Partnering closely with other cross-functional partners, including IT, Procurement & Supply Chain Management, Human Resources and Operations, to ensure finance input is well incorporated into broader company initiatives.
  • Provide direction and leadership in the effective execution and oversight of accounting and financial systems, policies, processes, practices and internal controls. Oversee the effective integration of processes with requirements for financial accounting, regulatory, internal and external financial reporting.
  • Provide leadership in aligning people, processes, systems, and financial data to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant financial reporting, including externally filed financial statements and Management Discussion & Analysis (MD&A) in accordance with US GAAP, securities regulations, and Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) requirements.
  • Provide leadership in SOX compliance, ensuring robust controls are embedded in core processes and systems. Champion continuous improvement initiatives to strengthen internal controls and align system capabilities with evolving regulatory and business requirements.
  • Enhance relationships across the broader finance management team, as well as other departments in the business who contribute to financial reporting deliverables.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), interpersonal and leadership skills. Must be able to provide effective change-management leadership that will effectuate change to support the departments’ strategy.
  • Demonstrated ability in business and/or finance transformation.
  • Demonstrated ability in change management with experience in leading change through large scale initiatives across people, process, technology, and have the ability to effectively communicate change to key stakeholders.
  • Strong strategic and analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of US GAAP and/or IFRS, financial standards and processes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of internal controls with the ability to evaluate and effectively create and implement changes to meet internal control requirements and enhance efficiency.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the finance industry and emerging trends in order to identify best practices and innovative approaches.
  • Experience preparing written materials, including reports, briefing notes, background, and other documents for senior management and/or government audiences, including the ability to communicate complex, detailed concepts widely to differing audiences in a concise, compelling manner in verbal, written and graphic formats.
  • Proven ability to both lead and work in a team environment by providing guidance and coaching in areas of expertise; this includes effective leadership, coaching and strong team building skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of financial applications (preferably SAP & BPC) and related financial reporting systems.
  • Experience in business intelligent tools, Power BI or other data analytics, and visualization platforms considered an asset.

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Degree in Business/Commerce with recognized Chartered Professional Accountant designation.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
  • Minimum of 8 to 10 years relevant experience in financial accounting systems, financial accounting and reporting, including public company accounting and/or rate-regulated utility responsibilities; or an equivalent combination of education training and experience.
