DESCRIPTION:
As part of the Regulatory Finance team, and under the general direction of the Manager, Regulatory Finance, the Senior Regulatory Finance Advisor will be responsible for providing advanced financial analysis and regulatory support. This role requires a strong understanding of U.S. GAAP to support accurate forecasting, financial reporting, and regulatory filings.
Key deliverables include revenue requirement modeling, monthly and quarterly financial reporting, and supporting regulatory applications with both technical accounting inputs and clear financial insight for senior leadership.
The ideal candidate brings strong accounting acumen and the ability to translate complex financial data into accurate, supportable regulatory analysis.
Please note that our Calgary Office will be relocating to Airdrie in early 2027.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Maintain a revenue requirement model that incorporates a variety of inputs from many functional areas and employs complex accounting and regulatory computations.
- Compile, analyze, and interpret financial data in accordance with U.S. GAAP in preparation for regulatory applications and assist with drafting corresponding sections.
- Provide extensive support throughout regulatory proceedings and litigation, and in response to subsequent compliance filings or AUC directives.
- Research, write, and review Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) and intervenor Information Requests to ensure strategic consistency and alignment across departments.
- Advise on interpretation and application of the Electric Utilities Act and Regulations, and of decisions from regulatory authorities.
- Stay abreast of developments concerning components of the Company’s revenue requirement and offer input on resulting implications and alternatives.
- Develop detailed analysis to assess the financial impacts of regulatory decisions and initiatives.
- Prepare monthly revenue accruals in compliance with regulatory parameters and applicable accounting standards.
- Provide internal reporting on corporate results, including detailed variance analysis, and support the monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting cycle for accounting, financial planning, and other management requirements.
- Assist in the development of financial forecasts and annual business plans, incorporating both regulatory and technical accounting inputs.
- Support financial modeling to estimate the potential impacts of projects or investments under different regulatory scenarios.
- Provide strategic economic analysis and reporting to senior management on trends and developments that may have financial impacts.
- Work with cross-functional teams on a variety of regulatory and financial issues.
- Identify and implement process improvements and resolve gaps in data or information quality.
- Special projects and other duties, as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Advanced knowledge of US GAAP and/or IFRS, financial standards and processes.
- Proven analytical skills, including experience with financial reporting, technical accounting, and complex modeling.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present financial and regulatory information to various audiences.
- Ability to build strong partnerships through technical expertise and business insight.
- Self-motivated and proactive in staying current with changes in regulatory and accounting environments, translating complex developments into clear, actionable insights that support sound business decisions.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in all financial outputs.
- Effective time management and organization to handle multiple deadlines.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel for modeling, data manipulation, and reporting.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Degree or diploma in Commerce or Business Administration with a recognized Chartered Professional Accounting designation.
- Minimum of 4 years of progressive experience in accounting and finance.
- Experience working in a regulated environment, preferably within the electrical utility industry, is considered an asset.
- Familiarity with SAP or a comparable ERP system and supporting data analysis software would be an asset.
- Understanding of utility ratemaking principles is also considered an asset.
