DESCRIPTION:
Under the general direction of the Manager, Corporate Finance and Reporting, the Supervisor Financial Reporting will primarily be responsible for performing accounting, analytical, and review functions in the Finance Department and providing leadership to the team. Experience in public reporting including financial statements and Management’s Discussion and Analysis (MD&A) preparation are essential attributes for success.
This role will be part of our hybrid (home and office) work force with office workspace located at our Calgary Office (320 17 Avenue SW, Calgary Alberta) with the relocation to our Airdrie office (15 Kingsview Rd SE) within the next 2-3 years. In office days have been designated as Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with work from home days as Mondays and Fridays.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (but not limited to):
Leadership:
• Lead, manage, coach, and motivate staff; this includes providing direction, expertise and advice to employees, identifying employee training requirements, and formally managing the performance of employees.
• Manage all elements of employee relations, including working closely with Human Resources on hiring, terminations, training, and performance appraisals for the employee file, administering progressive discipline, and resolving labour relations issues and/or grievances.
• Provides guidance, direction, and coaching for team members. Drive resource and capacity management across the teams to support projects and allocation of assignments.
• Lead and influence process change to promote efficiencies and embrace new technology to solve problems.
• Identifies and empowers individuals to maximize their strengths and potential within the team.
• Allow team members to take ownership of their areas of responsibility and setting clear expectations.
• Solicit recommendations from the team to solve problems, discuss challenging issues, and generate new ideas to streamline or automate processes to continuously improve service delivery while maintaining controls.
Management of Financial Reporting:
• Responsible for the preparation and analysis of the monthly, quarterly and year-end financial statements, MD&A and management reporting requirements.
• Responsible for completeness, accuracy, and timeliness of month-end and quarter-end processes.
• Perform monthly and quarterly review of deliverables internally to management, and externally to Fortis Inc and external auditors.
• Review and approve account reconciliations, journal entries and related analysis.
• Act as liaison with external auditors.
• Provide accounting input in areas of expertise on various corporate initiatives.
• Perform continual analysis of current processes to create efficiencies and enhance financial processes through automation in SAP.
• Stay current on Electric Utilities Commission applications and decisions to ensure understanding of implications for financial reporting and in particular with financial statements and MD&A.
• Responsible for pension accounting including year-end requirements, managing annual pension statement audit process, maintaining relationships with external Actuary.
Compliance:
• Ensure compliance with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP), tax or securities regulation, as applicable.
• Support the finance team’s assessment of whether the Company continues to report under US GAAP by becoming a US Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”) Issuer or pursue adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
• Ensure data integrity of financial systems, by ensuring compliance to financial procedures and accounting guidelines.
• Collaborate with other finance leaders to implement new accounting standards and other disclosure or governance requirements as they relate to areas of responsibility.
• Assist in the design, review, and evaluation of internal controls and ensure accounting and reporting processes comply with applicable internal control (SOX) requirements.
• Take ownership of the financial statement close process and work with internal audit.
• Work with other departments to provide recommendations and guidance, to facilitate proper accounting and disclosure of various matters.
• Special projects and other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
• Proven ability to lead effective and highly motivated teams by providing guidance and coaching in areas of expertise.
• Proven ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with team members and cross functional teams.
• Strong verbal, written and presentation skills, including the ability to clearly present information to various audiences in both formal and informal settings.
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint, specifically utilizing Excel for data analysis and modeling.
• Proficiency in SAP or other large ERP system and supporting data analysis software.
• Collaborate with stakeholders across the organization as well as with industry peers to achieve business and corporate objectives.
• Provide financial support to capital projects across the organization, develop meaningful insights that support planning and analysis activities, as well as regular updates on project metrics.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities and competing demands with tight timelines.
• Proven ability to exercise professional judgment and to assess the impact of issues on all areas of the organization.
• Strong quantitative and qualitative analytical skills to perform independent analysis with attention to details.
• In-depth technical knowledge in US GAAP and an understanding of IFRS.
• Demonstrated knowledge of, and ability to interpret, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and Canadian Security Commissions’ filing requirements.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
• Bachelor’s degree in finance, Commerce or Business Administration and a professional accounting designation (CPA) plus a minimum of 7 years of related experience; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
• Experience preparing financial statements and MD&A is required.
• Experience with public company reporting requirements is required.
• Technical proficiencies in applying generally accepted accounting principles; US GAAP or IFRS knowledge is required.
• Experience communicating complex, detailed concepts widely to differing audiences in a concise, compelling manner verbally, in writing and in graphic formats.
• Experience preparing written materials, including reports, briefing notes, background, and other documents for senior management, would be an asset.
• Experience with Workiva/Wdesk would be an asset.
• Accounting experience within rate regulated industries, energy or utilities is preferred.
