DESCRIPTION:
Under the general supervision of the Supervisor Safety Compliance, the Corporate Health and Safety Specialist is responsible for the safety incident investigation process including the identification of meaningful corrective actions that will positively impact the Safety Program. The position is also responsible for the improvement of the Safety Program through the interpretation and application of legislation and standards into the organization’s standards and procedures. Finally, the position will provide support, coaching and leadership to all functional areas.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (but are not limited to):
- Lead the safety incident investigation process using FortisAlberta standards, Taproot or 5 Why investigation protocols; this includes providing on-site leadership to support Managers and Supervisors as well as completing formal reports that include recommended corrective actions.
- Conduct random and scheduled work site inspections. This includes the identification of items that require improvement to meet safety regulations or standards to provide a safe working environment for employees, contractors, and all stakeholders.
- Provide safety specific technical expertise into the selection of suitable hazard controls including engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment standards.
- Monitor and interpret regulations and codes such as but not limited to AEUC, OH&S, Pipeline, Canadian Electrical Code.
- Conduct periodic audits of processes and contractors as necessary to ensure safety compliance.
- Create corrective action plans and provide coaching to supervisors and managers on solutions.
- Review data inputs and outputs in all FortisAlberta Safety Applications to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the reporting functionality and provide guidance and recommendations for the continuous improvements of the applications.
- Create, change, and develop documentation to support the Safety Management System such as procedures, formal hazard assessments, and the design of forms.
- Support the COR audit process.
- Act as a resource for the emergency response planning process.
- Assist in evaluating potential personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure the FortisAlberta requirements are met.
- Support the development and delivery of safety training program content for in-person and e-learning programs including safety awareness and training information for contractors and the general public.
- Develop content for safety meetings, campaigns, alerts, bulletins, and other corporate health and safety related communications for the organization.
- Participate in other department safety meetings to provide support and information.
- Work with other departments in the organization to ensure the safety of all stakeholders and the continuous evolution of the corporate safety culture.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Thorough understanding of applicable safety standards, code regulations and legislation with the ability to translate changes into company standards, policies and procedures.
- Thorough knowledge of key safety programs such as Health and Safety Management Systems, Hazard Identification & Mitigation, and Accident Investigations.
- Effective analytical skills are required to gather information from a variety of sources, interpret data, evaluate possible solutions and resolve issues.
- Proven ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders; this includes excellent communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
- Solid organizational and time management skills in order to prioritize numerous projects and competing demands.
- Demonstrated presentation skills with the ability to create and deliver presentations and training programs tailored to various audience types.
- Demonstrated initiative in recognizing opportunities for improvement and efficiency in safety specific processes and practices.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerBI)
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Health & Safety related Diploma plus three (3) years of safety related experience is required.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- A current valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s license is required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATION:
- Completion of a Certified Safety Professional designation or equivalent certification would be an asset
- Experience working in a regulated environment, preferably within the electrical utility industry, would be an asset.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
- Some travel with possible overnight stays is required.
- May be required to work overtime.
