TITLE: Apprentice Power Line Technician - Wainwright (U25-225)

DESCRIPTION: Reporting to the Supervisor Field Operations and under the general supervision of the Crew or Operations Lead, the Apprentice Powerline Technician will complete a four-year Power Line Technician apprenticeship through in-house education and on the job training. Under the guidance of Journeymen Power Line Technicians, the Apprentice Power Line Technician will learn how to construct, operate and maintain the electric distribution system in an effort to obtain Journeyman status and the inter-provincial Red Seal certification.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (but not limited to):
- Construct, operate, maintain, repair, and troubleshoot the electric distribution system (both overhead and underground).
- Operate large equipment such as Radial Boom Diggers, aerial devices, trailers, trucks, and tools, cranes, derricks, trucks, tools, and computers.
- Operate electronic equipment such as computers, relevant programs, and meters as well as specific utility devices such as locators and fault-finding equipment.
- Complete task sheets, educational, and compliance assignments and exams as required and in a timely manner.
- Work safely and in accordance with safety practice regulations and procedures.
- Draft and check switching plans and perform switching under direct supervision.
- Perform live line work under direct supervision.
- Patrol and inspect power lines, record, repair, and report issues.
- Provide quick and courteous customer service for trouble calls, power interruptions, or other matters.
- Participate in a regular standby rotation.
- Perform other duties or participate on special projects as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Proven ability to work within a team environment or independently as an individual contributor; this includes promoting and applying safe work practices and contributing to the success of the entire team.
- Strong customer service skills with an ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with internal and external customers and contractors; this includes good communication, interpersonal and problem solving skills.
- Good organizational and time management skills, able to manage numerous assignments and competing demands.
- Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety and safe work practices.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- A current valid Alberta Power Line technician apprenticeship is required; or
- A completed High School diploma, including completion of grade 12 math and grade 12 English is required plus completion of the FortisAlberta temporary labourer program is required.
- In lieu of grade 12 math, completion of a recognized math course as part of a compulsory trade apprenticeship or journeyman program may be considered.
- A valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license is required; or
- The ability to obtain an Alberta Class 3 driver’s license with air endorsement within the first six (6) months of employment is required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Additional trade certifications, certificates, diplomas, or degrees in a related discipline would be considered an asset.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
- Business needs dictate that the successful candidate will be required to live within fifty (50) kilometres of the assigned service point office or a distance that allows a maximum forty (40) minute response time to the assigned service point office.
- Participation in an evening and weekend standby rotation is required.
- Some overnight travel away from home will be required.
- This has been identified as a safety-sensitive position. All successful candidates will be subject to a pre-employment drug and alcohol test
- A written quiz covering technical, safety, or other related skills may be administered as part of the selection process for external candidates.
- The successful candidate will be required to produce a current driver's abstract and will be subject to a criminal background check.
